Osteosarcoma is the most common type of bone cancer occuring in 60% of the cases. More often it develops during the period of rapid growth which occurs in adolescence, as a teenager matures into an adult.

For a long time the unique method of treatment was amputation but at the present time patient has a good chance to keep the organ and recover.

In children's hospital Schneider our chance was estimated in 80%. For people with cancer it is a good prospect.

The treatment can be divided into three stages: preoperative chemotherapy, operation, postoperative chemotherapy.

The most important is the first chemotherapy as the result of all the treatment depends on it.

In Schneider doctors can do very aggressive chemotherapy. Unfortunately in Ukraine there is no possibility to give hard treatment.

The entire course of chemotherapy costs $94 211.

The first part of the treatment will take approximately two months. After that it is necessary to do surgery to remove the tumour and the part of the affected bone and put an artificial limb. It will cost approximately 30 thousand.

After the operation they will do analyses on sensitivity of the tumour to medicine.

Postoperative chemotherapy depends on these results, therefore the exact price is unknown. Except this there is always a risk of complications and occurrence of metastasises. So, currently it is evaluated yet in approx. 30000 USD

This type of tumors is not sensitive to radiation and less sensitive to chemotherapy. The only way to treat is very aggresive chemotherapy and operation for tumor removal.

In Ukraine and Israel are different ways to treat the disease. The operation is considered to be the main stage in Ukraine, and chemotherapy is an auxiliary stage. Small doses, because there is no adequate instrumentation to control poison concentrations in the blood. Therefore, it usually does not give the desired result.

In Israel, by contrast, the operation is considered a technical point. The focus is on chemotherapy, during which in some cases the tumor and metastases may be completely destroyed which makes it impossible for the outbreak of disease relapse.
